Walked into Petco tonight to find the store's dog trainer spraying a dog relentlessly in the face for barking at customers' dogs at the checkout counter, which the trainer had stationed the dog next to. I spoke with the trainer about my concerns, and was told that they were spraying the dog because the dog was stressed (as if that would somehow make the dog less stressed) and I also spoke with another employee who I believe was the manager, and was told that it was okay because this was the senior dog trainer there.
The store has a great selection of pet supplies including a particular bone that REALLY helps my small dog with bad tarter on his teeth. Only complaint is that they're under staffed and it's difficult to find an employee when you need help.
If people are going to entrust the well-being of their pets to another person, they need to know that this person has the best interest of their pets in mind and is up-to-date with the latest research into canine behavior. Punishing the dog without even trying to teach it what you want is shown to create more behavioral issues than it solves in scenarios like this, and isn't fair to the dog. Teach the dog what you want it to do, otherwise you're simply punishing the dog for your own lack in ability. This could also create issues for the customer's dogs, who do not necessarily want a large, stressed dog barking at them. I was very disappointed to find that this Petco store employed such methods, and hope that it changes in the future.
Nice store. Bad customer service. Ferrets cafe was filthy; No food or water in bowls and bottles.
This is one of the larger stores. They're never out of stock on anything we need. Android/Apple Pay is a huge plus!
Very good products, price and staff, food and supplies for many different types of pets. Parking is ample, could use a bit more lighting at night but its a large, clean, well marked parking lot. All in all a fine place to shop.
